Arkansas Bill To Ban Single-Use Bags

Little Rock, Arkansas, April 20, 2013 (PBBR) - Arkansas State Representative Denny Altes has introduced a bill into the Arkansas General Assembly to ban single-use plastic bags in food stores.

The bill, to be known as the "Reusable Shopping Bag Act", will prohibit a store from providing single-use shopping bags to customers. Neither plastic bags or paper bags will be allowed to be used. The bill also will require stores to make reusable bags available for purchase by customers.

If passed, the law will take effect January 1, 2014.  The law will also require the Arkansas Dept. of Environmental Quality to submit reports to the Legislative Council as to the effectiveness of the law in achieving widespread use of reusable bags.

The bill is currently in the Committee on Public Health, Welfare and Labor.
