Used under license Creative Commons[/learn_more] On August 16, 2010, Calamba City, Laguna, Philippines approved an ordinance prohibiting the use of plastic bags on dry goods. Calamba City Ordinance No. 10-481 also prohibits the use of Styrofoam within the city.

Reasons cited for passing the ordinance were:

  • The city government is spending a considerable amount of money on waste disposal
  • Plastic bags and Styrofoam clog creeks, canals, rivers and other waterways
  • To prevent potential serious ecological imbalance
  • Desire to reduce, if not totally eliminate, plastic film bags and Styrofoam as packaging materials

The City also strongly promotes reusable bags, woven bags, cloth bags and other packaging material.
