Maryland Proposes Fee on Disposable Carryout Bags

Annapolis, MD, April 19, 2013 (PBBR) - SB 0576, a bill entitled "Community Cleanup and Greening Act of 2013" proposes to impose a 5 cent fee on disposable carryout bags, paper or plastic.

Introduced by Senator Raskin, the bill would allow each retailer to retain one cent of the fee and two cents of the fee if the store has a customer bag credit program.

HB 1111 - A bill that would only affect the retailers and citizens of Prince George's County. The bill is entitled, "Prince George's County - Authority to Impose Fees for Use of Disposable Bags".

The bill would authorize Prince George's County to impose, by law, a fee on specified retail establishments for use of disposable bags as part of a retail sale of products. This bill must be passed by the state legislature but affects only Prince George's County.
