Nevada City Plans Plastic Bag Ban

Nevada City Plans Plastic Bag Ban

Nevada City, California, March 8, 2014 (PBBR) - The City Council of Nevada City is planning to implement a plastic bag ban. Council plans to model an ordinance based on the ordinance adopted by the Town of Truckee. Truckee, 50 miles to the east, is located in the same county. Truckee passed a plastic bag ban last November which will come into force on June 1st of this year.

Nevada City is working toward adopting the ordinance in late July or August to beat the deadline of September 1st in case a state bill, SB 270, is passed by the state legislature. If passed, SB 270 would ban future plastic bag bans.

Council directed staff to start the outreach to citizens and businesses. Staff will create an online survey to gather information from the general public concerning the proposed plastic bag ban.

A small city born out of the Gold Rush of 1850, Nevada City is located in the Sierra Nevada, some 60 miles northeast of Sacramento.
