Ocean Beach People’s Co-op To Charge For Plastic Bags
Posted by Ted Duboise
Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Co-op Market serves the neighborhood of Ocean Beach, California. The Co-op mostly sells vegetables and produce with a huge variety of organic produce.
The Market also sells milk and dairy products and has an on-premise deli.
In September, the Co-op announced that starting in January 2011, they would charge for the large, thick plastic bags used mainly in the Produce Department.
According to General Manager Nancy Casady, the charge to the customer will be 15 cents, which is the price the Co-op pays for the bags.
Another major change will also take place in January. The General Manager stated that the Co-op will no longer sell single-serve plastic bottled water.
Ms. Casady stated that these changes are in order to reduce the use of plastic. She also said that the new way will soon be second nature, leaving nature second to none.
