Palo Alto Extends Plastic Bag Ban

Palo Alto Extends Plastic Bag Ban

Includes Restaurants
In 2009, the City of Palo Alto, California adopted a plastic bag ordinance which regulated plastic bags only at large retailers. On March 11, 2013, the city expanded that plastic bag ordinance to include all retailers, including restaurants.

The new extension of the ordinance will regulate the sale of paper bags also. The ordinance will:

  • Ban single-use plastic bags at all retail and foodservice businesses
  • Mandate a ten cents charge for all paper or reusable bags required by a customer. The business keeps the entire fee and it isn't taxable. The fee does not apply to foodservice establishments
  • Increase durability standards for reusable bags using industry testing requirements

The ordinance will become effective on July 1st, 2013 for retailers and November 1st, 2013 for foodservice establishments.
