The City of Portland, Oregon has stepped up to fight plastic bag usage within it's borders.
After the State Legislature failed to take action on a proposed statewide ban, Portland's City Council voted unanimously to adopt their own "Single-Use Plastic Checkout Bag" ordinance on July 21st. (Read the ordinance)
The City had already decided last year to ban single-use plastic bags but decided to wait to see if the State Legislature would take action.
Portland Mayor Sam Adams was totally for the ban on single-use plastic checkout bags. Here is a clip from the City Council meeting, courtesy of the Mayor.
The plastic bag ban will take effect October 15th of this year.
