Rye, NY Plastic Bag Ban | Plastic Bag Ban Report
May 7, 2012 (PBBR) - An ordinance passed in December, 2011 takes effect today in Rye, New York. The City of Rye, New York added Chapter 154 Retail Checkout Bags to the City Code for the purpose of banning the use of plastic bags for retail checkout and promoting the use of reusable checkout bags for purchases.
The ordinance applies to all retailers stating: Any person engaged in retail sales shall provide only reusable bags and/or recyclable paper bags as checkout bags to customers. Read the full ordinance.
The law exempts certain types of plastic bags including:
- Thin-film produce and meat bags
- Dry cleaning bags
- Plastic bags that are a minimum 2.25 mil thick
The ordinance also does not apply to other types of plastic packaging, such as plastic bottles, plastic containers, etc.
