The City of Brownsville started their plastic bag ban a few days ago. Now, another Texas city has banned plastic bags. South Padre Island, just to the north of Brownsville, is following suit.
The South Padre Island City Council voted unanimously in support of a proposed ordinance to prohibit retailers from giving out plastic check-out bags at the point of sale.
The ordinance will be voluntary beginning Feb. 1st this year and will take full effect on January 1st, 2012. South Padre Island is a popular tourist destination on Texas' east coast.
