State of Maine Seeks to Minimize Plastic Bags

Augusta, Maine, April 16, 2013 (PBBR) - State Representative Paul McGowan has introduced a bill into the State of Maine Legislature to reduce the use of plastic bags in the state.

The bill, HP919, "An Act To Minimize the Use of Plastic Bags", if passed will require the retailer to:

  • install a recycling bin to collect used plastic bags
  • ensure the collected bags are recycled
  • charge a ten cents fee for each bag distributed at the point of sale
  • provide reusable bags for purchase by customers

The bill was referred to the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources on April 2nd. A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for Monday April 22nd.
