Virginia Tables Proposed 5 cents Plastic Bag Tax

Richmond, VA, April 19, 2013 (PBBR) - Introduced by Joseph D. Morrissey, House Bill 1381 would impose a five cents tax on plastic bags required by a customer at the point of purchase. The tax would be collected by retailers and deposited into the Virginia Water Quality Improvement Fund.

Retailers would be allowed to keep one cent of the tax. The tax would not apply to plastic bags over 2.25 mil thick.

On January 16, a Finance Subcommittee recommended laying on the table by voice vote. On Feb. 5th, the bill was left in Finance.
